Author(s): Heribert Amann

Fashion & Jewellery

This book shows the extraordinary richness of textile art from Iban and their neighbouring tribes of Kantu, Ketungau and Mualang, in the north of Borneo. The more than 150 full page brilliant colour photographs are taken from one of the most outstanding private collections of these works and many have never been published before. The works are ceremonial textiles used in rites of passages birth, marriage, death dyed with natural colours and woven in traditional Ikat techniques and also include the clothing worn during those ceremonies. This rich textile tradition remains influential for contemporary textile artists and designers. Note: Until the turn of the last century these tribes were still practicing headhunting! Some 25 black and white archival photographs add context to the tribal traditions.
