Stalin's Wine Cellar by John Baker

$35.00 AUD

Available Stock:
21

Category: Wine

In the late 1990s, John Baker was known as a purveyor of quality rare and old wines. Always entrepreneurial and up for adventure, John was the perfect person for an occasional business partner, Andrew Simon, to approach with a mysterious wine list that was foreign to anything John, or his second-in-comm and, Kevin Hopko, had ever come across. The list was discovered to be a comprehensive catalogue of the wine collection of Nicholas II, the last Czar of Russia. The wine had become the property of the state after the Russian Revolution of 1918, during which Nicholas and his entire family were executed. Now owned by Stalin, the wine was discretely removed to a remote Georgian winery when Stalin was concerned the advancing Nazi army might overrun Russia, and inevitably loot artefacts and treasures. Half a century later, the wine was rumoured to be hidden underground and off any known map. John and Kevin embarked on an audacious, colourful and potentially dangerous journey to Georgia to discover if the wines actually existed; if the bottles were authentic and whether the entire collection could be bought and transported to a major London auction house for sale. Stalin's Wine Cellar is a wild, sometimes rough ride in the glamorous world of high end wine. The cast of characters include Stalin, Hitler, Czar Nicholas II and a motley bunch of Georgian businessmen/cowboys toting handguns, in the early days of Russian business development that led to the world of Putin and oligarchs. ...Show more

Adelaide Hills by Shane McNally

$34.95 AUD

Available Stock:
3

Category: Wine

For visitors, the experience is breathtaking as these low-lying hills go from rolling farmland and natural bushland to sweeping vineyards, cherry farms and apple orchards. Then every few minutes, there's a town that offers a history lesson, photo opportunity, coffee or tea break, wine tasting and world- class dining and accommodation. The Adelaide Hills rise only 700 metres at the highest point. What they lack in height, though, they more than make up for in depth. They start just over five kilometres from the Adelaide CBD but take in more than 1000 square kilometres - making them ideal for a quick visit, a Devonshire tea, a drive to a local winery for lunch or an entire week lost in pristine valleys with access to busy country towns and tiny villages that have barely changed in more than 150 years. From Hahndorf which seamlessly blends tourism and culture to the restaurants and art of Stirling, the thriving rural centre of Mount Barker and dozens of townships established in the mid 1800s, the Adelaide Hills has a built heritage and lifestyle that matches its natural beauty. The rich history of the Adelaide Hills can be seen in every town and most of the roads that link them. Country cottages buried in thick woods and farmland are there for the observant traveller, so are stately mansions off the main road and even the odd ruin that's been kept in its original form for posterity. The living heritage continues to evolve, with the Adelaide Hills reviving an almost lost winemaking history to become a thriving wine district boasting some of Australia's best and most popular wineries and around 50 cellar doors. This book looks at what makes the Adelaide Hills an Australian treasure, with just enough words to inform and entertain without getting in the way of hundreds of images of the stunning landscape. It looks at the significant towns and the features that draw people to visit the Adelaide Hills - the wineries of course but also the walking trails, the conservation parks and a rich calendar of traditional, multicultural, artistic, sporting and culinary events that run throughout the four distinct seasons. ...Show more

Puligny-Montrachet - Journal of a Village in Burgundy by Simon Loftus

$30.00 AUD

Available Stock:
2

Category: Wine

"What Simon Loftus does in this captivating story of a Burgundy village is to explore the mystery of how seven and a half acres of impoverished soil became the most precious agricultural land on earth, producing the grandest of all white wines: Puligny-Montrachet. " "He immerses us first in the village 's colorful history - its ancient rivalries and political intrigues. Then he takes us behind the shuttered windows of Puligny-Montrachet today, a sleepy village of only five hundred inhabitants, mostly immigrants with only a few of the old families remaining. We meet the butcher, the baker, the bookbinder, the mayor, the chambermaid, and, of course, the vignerons - from the small growers cultivating a few rows of vines to the owners of all the best Domaines." "Even as we come to understand how the sense of community in Puligny is eroding, Loftus, with his intense passion for the place and the people who are its lifeblood, makes us revel in the rhythms of the agricultural year: the bonfires of the winter prunings, the harvest when pickers invade the land and tractors roar through the narrow streets to transport the grapes to the cellars, and the heady celebrations when the new wine is tasted." "Through it all Loftus with his wine merchant's expertise makes us see how all the elements - soil, sub-soil, drainage, exposure to sun - converge to create the perfect environment for the vineyards, and how the grapes are transformed through human hands into the final "treasured product." Bach vintage becomes what he calls "an intense but elusive testimony to the place." And so is this enchanting journal. It is a book you will savor like a splendid glass of Puligny-Montrachet, relishing every nuance of flavor and cherishing the memory it leaves imprinted on the senses." ...Show more

Wine in Words - Notes for Better Drinking by Lettie Teague; Wacso (Illustrator)

$25.00 AUD

Available Stock:
2

Category: Wine

Delectably brief essays that tell you only what you need to know to enjoy wine. There are wine encyclopedias, bibles, and guides--this is not one of those books. It doesn't contain everything, just the really important stuff: the truly key wines, grapes, regions; tips about wine buying, aging, and stora ge; and useful explanations about tasting notes and whether or not vintages really matter. In short, this book covers the real absolutes that you need to know about wine. With the pithy wit that readers of her columns have come to expect, Lettie Teague breaks down the stumbling blocks that often intimidate us and clears up the myths that cloud our understanding. A series of mini-essays cover the essentials in a fun, omnibus fashion. The tone is sometimes irreverent, sometimes opinionated, but always practical. For instance, there are entries such as "The Unbearable Oakiness of Being," "Can Wedding Wine Be Good," and "Why You Really Need Only One Glass." Other entries may provoke some lively debate, such as "Men Are from Cab, Women Are from Moscato" and "In Defense of Wine Snobs." The opposite of a didactic textbook, this volume is not meant to be read from start to finish. Instead, like wine itself, it encourages small contemplative sips. It is a companion for the modern taster, a concise and curated collection of tidbits to satisfy anyone with a lively curiosity and palate. ...Show more

Adventures on the Wine Route: A Wine Buyer's Tour of France (25th Anniversary Edition) by Kermit Lynch

$30.00 AUD

Available Stock:
2

Category: Wine

"Wine is, above all, about pleasure. Those who make it ponderous make it dull . . . If you keep an open mind and take each wine on its own terms, there is a world of magic to discover." So wrote the renowned wine expert Kermit Lynch in the introduction to Adventures on the Wine Route, his ultimate tour of France, especially its wine cellars. The "magic" of wine is Lynch's subject as he takes the reader on a singular journey through the Loire, Bordeaux, the Languedoc, Provence, northern and southern Rhone, and Burgundy. In Adventures on the Wine Route, the wine lover will find wisdom without a trace of pretension and hype. As Victor Hazan wrote, "In Kermit Lynch's small, true, delightful book there is more understanding about what wine really is than in everything else I have read." Praise for Lynch and for Adventures on the Wine Route has not ceased since the book's initial publication thirty years ago. In 2007, The New York Times called it "one of the finest American books on wine." And in June 2012, The Wall Street Journal proclaimed it "the best book on the wine business." Full of vivid portraits of French vintners, memorable evocations of the French countryside, and, of course, vibrant descriptions of French wines, this new edition of Adventures on the Wine Route updates a modern classic for our times. ...Show more
