Architecture

Australian cities are under pressure as ever more people seek to live in our urban areas. Our cities need to grow and the question is how - up or out or perhaps both? 'Home: Evolution of the Australian Dream', provides a rare insight into the history and development of the Australian house. Ranging from discussion of the individual house to its place in the broader community, the book beautifully describes the key housing movements from Utopia to Suburbia. As well as examining both past and present, the authors lay out the choices we have for our cities in clear and accessible language. The text is stunningly illustrated with 50 original watercolours painted by Philip Cox especially for this book. Philip Cox is one of Australia's best-known architects having designed major buildings both internationally and in all Australian cities. Philip Graus has been involved in housing for over 25 years. Bob Meyer is one of Sydney's most experienced planners and has been responsible for metropolitan scale plans as well as new centres. The three authors are all architects as well as town planners, giving them a wide perspective that encompasses design as well as the broader socio-economic dimensions of housing. It is their belief that the community must be informed and engaged in decisions that affect the future forms of our cities and how we live. This publication gives the reader the chance to understand our urban past in order to achieve the best cities for our future.
